In Ancient times, this policy served China - and its growth - extraordinarily well. Economic inequality within the country itself aside, culture thrived (think here of the traditional Chinese theater), architecture achieved amazing heights, both Confucianism and Buddhism were widely practiced. The lavishness of the Emperor court's life had few equals. The luxury of the silk outfits, the magnificence of hand-carved Jade, Chinese jewelry and sculpture, the decadence of Chinese gold and silver products, the beauty of their interior designs, furnishings, porcelain..... The Chinese science brought forth such incredible inventions as the compass, fireworks and paper to name just a few.
