Can jewelry do that? You bet! Most garments and accessories you wear either contribute to - or diminish - your appearance.

Obviously "the rules" vary and there is no way to elaborate on every detail here, but in broad strokes these are the DOs and DON'Ts.

First and foremost, your height and weight.

If you're tall and slender, pretty much anything goes. If you're tall and not very slender - generally speaking - wear longer necklaces: longer meaning those that end right above the waist. If you're short in stature, stay away from too long necklaces and too long earrings. If you're medium height and not skinny, explore specific recommendations by type of jewelry, below.

THE RIGHT NECKLACE FOR YOUR BODY TYPE: If you've been blessed by a swan-like neck: short and medium length necklaces will compliment this beautiful feature. Now, if your lovely neck is a part of a tall body: you can wear any necklace you want. If you happen to be less than tall or not slender, be careful with chunky / bulky necklaces and pendants. A long necklace however will create the illusion of a slimmer body.

EARRINGS FOR YOUR BODY TYPE: earrings accentuate face and neck. If you have an oval-shaped face and a nice neck, most styles will compliment them. If you have a fuller face and not too long a neck, smaller, daintier earrings are best. If you happen to carry a few pounds too many on your frame, the smaller the earrings, the better.

BRACELET FOR YOUR BODY TYPE. Surprisingly in this case, unless you're very small and very slender, choose larger, heavier bracelets and watches they'll make your hands, arms and body appear smaller and slimmer.

BROCHE FOR YOUR BODY TYPE Brooches and pins don't discriminate, they work great on all body types. The one thing to consider is a strategic placement. The worst "sin": placing a broche or a pin right under your neck, for most girls it will shorten their necks. Use your imagination: place a broche on the shoulder or to elongate your neckline: place a broche low on your shirt or jacket, just before the breasts begin.

RINGS FOR YOUR BODY TYPE, let's start at the beginning: unlike other types of jewelry, rings represent our feelings and commitments. For the sake of this article, please exclude these precious rings. I'm not about to pass any style judgment on anyone's sentimental values. Let's talk about costume rings. There are two factors to consider: the size and shape.

A hand with a larger (more substantial) ring appears smaller and more delicate. (Did you ever notice a plump hand wearing a dainty ring? It looks awful!)

When it comes to shape, round and horizontally-designed rings are for the brave and those with slim hands and long fingers. For the rest of us, oval and / or vertically-focused designs are better because they slim and elongate the hand and fingers.

To summarize: Tall (and medium height) girls: a necklace or a pendant of your choice; even huge earrings (they'll make you look like a million!); a well-placed brooch; larger bracelet, or a watch; a substantial ring. Not all at once, of course: two at a time usually work best.

Shorter, slim girls: avoid jewelry (and any other garments for that matter) that would make you appear shorter. In your particular case, sweeter and lighter is better than bold.

Girls with a few pounds to loose: longer necklaces, smaller (lighter) pendants; smaller earrings; strategically placed brooches; medium heavy bracelets and watches; rings with elongating design.

General thought on wearing jewelry to accentuate your best assets, choose ONE body feature you'd like to emphasize, at a time. General thought on impressing with your fine taste in jewelry: wear ONE striking piece of jewelry at a time.
